Dinner

Softly lit one room apartment with full kitchen. One small side room. Epic seeming bathtub in bathroom. Man enters & turns on lights. The room is neat & clean, spacious & inviting. Woman knocks, man invites woman in. She takes off her shoes & enters main room (wow, a table with only two chairs – so sweet I love it). She sits down at the table. Man begins to cook (If she doesn't like this I will make her do Bakasana until sunrise & then some). Electricity fails completely. Man lights candles & abandons the dinner. The peas sigh (we had hoped we would be eaten by these refined individuals). The lemons fill with a sense of willful pride. All the objects in the room can see in the dark so they continue to watch the man & woman. He lights two candles. She notices. They sit face to face, knees barely touching, & discuss wildflowers. This one, that one, this one, that one. Then they have a contest. She wins. They play again. She wins. Second bottle of wine. Crystal ball contest – balance crystal ball on crown chakra while pirouetting eight times. Man wins. The apartment becomes cold. They go from the dark into the dark for a walk. The man carefully wraps the woman in two very special cashmere blankets & wears a fancy full length body suit made of recycled knitwear. The woman insists on wearing the body suit so they switch outer layers. They walk outside & the stars are vivid. They walk to the end of the road & beyond. Along they way they make friends & a group of cats of all ages begin to follow them. As they walk into the woods the cats run ahead & are slightly visible due to the faint moonlight. In one night they witness all phases of the moon. Walking halfway up the hill the man & woman stop & sit down. They sit quietly for hours, drifting off to sleep at times & sometimes waking up & talking to one another. The woman tells a story about a great warrior & a fantastic battle scene. The man listens & then tells an epic story about two twin bears who lived their entire life in the wilderness, never once seeing a human. The crickets are talking about these people & making bets on their hobbies & habits. One cricket bets the woman is really a marine biologist, rather than a circus performer - based on her recycled knitwear body suit. Another cricket bets the man is a top notch genius scientist, with a no nonsense sense of charm & intelligence. The fullness of silence in the forest falls upon their senses. (My dead ancestors... I honor them & wonder if they can hear my thoughts or see me right now... ) (Let's stay warm) (Let's stay for a while) They walk home. The cats follow. On the way they make jokes & play another game. The woman wins again. But not for long, the man thinks. (I have an immense plan to take on a pure & infinite winning streak from here onward!) On their walk home snow begins to fall. They watch the moon slowly fade behind the falling snow. The smell of snow is delicious. Snow melts on their faces. The last few miles are quite pleasant as the snow begins to cover everything. The white visual softness mutes the sounds of the forest & they listen.

You are so tired through and through because a good half of what you do here in this organization has nothing to do with your true powers, or the place you have reached in your life. You are only half here, and half here will kill you after a while. You need something to which you can give your full powers. You know what that is; I don't have to tell you...

You only have to touch the elemental waters in your own life, and it will transform everything. But you have to let yourself down into those waters from the ground on which you stand, and that can be hard. Particularly if you think you might drown...

And to die, which is the letting go

of the ground we stand on and cling to every day...

Inner Compass
